Cryptid Index is a reference guide to cryptids: creatures such as Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster and the Jersey Devil that people report seeing but that science has not recognized. Each entry explains where a legend comes from, what the earliest sources actually say, which sightings shaped it, and what ordinary explanations researchers have proposed.
Who runs Cryptid Index
Cryptid Index is written and edited by Eli Harrow, based in Western New York. Most cryptid pages online repeat the same handful of claims without saying where they came from. Cryptid Index goes back to the original newspaper reports, historical texts and folklore collections and lays out what they say in plain language.
What you will find in an entry
- A short summary of the creature and where it is said to live
- Its origins, traced to the earliest known source
- Notable reported sightings, with dates and places where they are known
- The explanations proposed by skeptics, biologists and folklorists
- Its place in local culture and popular media
- A list of references so you can check the sources yourself
Our approach
Cryptid Index does not try to prove or disprove that any creature exists. We report what witnesses and sources have claimed, mark the difference between a documented report and a later retelling, and include the most likely mundane explanations alongside the legend.
Many creatures covered here come from Indigenous and regional traditions that are still living cultures, not just cryptozoology. Where that is the case, we say so and treat those traditions on their own terms.
A work in progress
We are revising older entries to add full reference lists and dated sighting timelines. Revised entries show an updated date under the title. Our Editorial & Sources Policy explains the standard every entry is held to.
